Lowering your 996 is a great way to improve its handling, although lowering it can also create some unwanted geometry changes leading to bump-steer.

Bump-steer is created when the suspension arms of your Porsche are set at a different angle to that of the tie rod ends. This difference in angles means the suspension arms and tie rods operate on different movement arcs, restricting movement and causing the front toe angle to change dynamically when driving over bumps when cornering. This causes vague steering, understeer and impedes driver confidence at the limit.

Geometry Explained

Bump Steer
Bump steer is highly undesirable within racing especially on tracks or surfaces that contain bumps. If the suspension is constantly transitioning between bump and droop, then a car with bump steer will constantly be shifting the steering angle of the car and will make the front end very unstable at high speeds. The bump steer in the system will affect the precisely designed Ackermann steering geometry and will make the steering more unpredictable for the driver.

Bump steer can provide an advantage to the rear end of a car on a smooth circuit effectively providing “active toe” during cornering. This can be used on a front wheel drive car to produce toe out, when the suspension is in bump, at the rear of the car to encourage oversteer on turn in; removing understeer characteristics.

I was slightly apprehensive that the stock dampers might be exposed but I needn't have worried, the car rides exactly as I'd expect & want from a roadgoing M-car. The real revelation is the steering, I could feel the difference as soon as I turned out of your premises. Gone is the sluggish, heavy response - it's now quick, effortless & accurate, almost as if the power steering had been switched off beforehand. Recently bought a 2025 M3 LCI which seemed ok out of the box. In the wet there was quite bad understeer and slightly unpredictable transition into oversteer. The CS+ handling package transformed the car. The grip is ridiculous, feel is improved, can really lean on the car. Driving in the wet traction is like it’s dry, extremely stable. Car is predictable, any transition to understeer or oversteer is communicated and feels like slow motion with plenty of time to correct. Feel like all the handling of a CS car with all the comfort or a regular M car. Absolutely love the car now.
